Seat cushions and backrest carry right out to the door without wheelwell intrusion, offer space for a six-footer to sit comfortably behind another one, and easy entry and egress. The center seat is better padded than many, and as such it loses a bit of headroom to the outer seats. There are no rear reading lamps.  three interior colors are offered on the sedans, black, gray, and ivory, while the coupe goes black or ivory only. Honda's graphics for the variable intermittent wipers are among the simplest: rather than bars, lines or dots of differing size, the accord uses one raindrop for long interval and three raindrops for more frequent wiping. The shifter is right at hand, and the proper handbrake has short travel.  controls for sound, climate, and navigation are central below the navigation screen and vents. One row of switches controls audio input (am, xm, cd, etc.) and another row has six audio presets. Voice activation can handle a multitude of chores without a hand ever leaving the steering wheel.  all accords except the lx sedan include active noise cancellation, but we were hard-pressed to notice the difference between lx and ex. Restyled, refined, retuned suspension, back on track. introductionthe honda civic began its ninth generation with the 2012 model, which was disappointing on account of cost-cutting. The 2013 civic sedan is changed a bit, becoming what the 2012 should have been, with a pretty exterior, snazzy interior, satisfying suspension, and a cabin full of tricks from bluetooth to pandora.  the nose, hood, black honeycomb grille and angled headlamps are pleasing to the eye, with a humped hood and raked windshield that draw attention. The side sills are sculpted smartly, and with body-colored mirrors and door handles, the civic looks classy, especially with the optional alloy wheels. The rear fenders flow nicely into a horizontal v over each side of the rear bumper.  in the cabin there's a ton of standard content, such as bluetooth phone and bluetooth audio, pandora internet radio interface and mp3, usb, ipod and sms text message capability. There's a nice color multi-information display (i-mid) with rearview camera.  the fabric upholstery is excellent, with seats that are well shaped, nicely bolstered and widely adjustable. The standard 60/40 split-folding rear seatback expands cargo capacity. We put a six-footer in the rear seat, and he didn't complain about legroom or headroom.  interior refinements include a new headliner and soft-touch materials on the instrument panel, center console, and door panels. Silver accents here and there, along with faux stitching on the dashboard and door panels, add a touch of upscale. Black carpeting is standard. The colorful instrument backlighting is soothing.  significantly, nvh (noise, vibration and harshness) has been improved over the 2012. More sound deadening material has been added to the firewall, wheel wells, flooring and trunk, while the windshield and front windows are thicker, all in the successful pursuit of silence. On the inside, the civic neither feels nor sounds like a mere $20,000 car.  we found the i-vtec 140-horsepower engine with its 128 foot-pounds of torque to be adequate. Acceleration performance is average but feels stronger because the engine is smooth and cabin quiet. We easily ran 75 mph in econ and impressively got 32. 1 miles per gallon.  the suspension has been reworked for 2013 with thicker anti-roll bars front and rear, quicker steering, and firmer bushings. The front subframe body structure is stiffer. We've had it on the track and its performance is marvelous.  there are also three high-mileage versions of the civic. The civic hf uses a specially tuned version of the same 1. 8-liter engine to achieve an epa-rated 29/41 mpg city/highway, compared to 28/39 mpg for the civic lx and ex. It gets 27/38 mpg on the cheaper fuel. Fuel economy is rated at 44/44 mpg. The 2013 civic actually catches some eyes with its changes. We got comments about the car's good looks, driving an ex for one week.  honda had made a decision to go with the austerity times on the redesigned 2012 sedan, which sported new fascias and character lines, but nothing bold. (the previous-generation civic was the bold one, and its then-radical aerodynamics flow through to the 2013 model.) by playing it close to the vest, the class-leading civic sedan was upstaged in all directions; witness the skyactiv mazda3, stylish ford focus, and the hyundai elantra, a swoopy good deal. So for 2013 honda responds with a rapid comeback, starting with the body makeover of the sedan. (meanwhile, the coupe, with its own identity, doesn't get changed because there was no demand to change it.)  the nose and tail are new, up to the hood and trunk lid. The black honeycomb mesh grill looks serious, if disguised, undermined by a thin chrome smile and half-hidden behind the mundane (but universally recognizable) honda emblem. We could do without the gratuitous horizontal chrome strip within the fascia.  the a-pillars have been thinned, but the steep rake of the windshield is untouched. The side sills are sculpted smartly; with body-colored mirrors and door handles, the civic looks classy. But not the lx with its awful plastic wheelcovers. Honda designers did good on bumpers. At the tail above the bumper, it's restyled but still ordinary, even with big new two-piece taillamps. We could do without the gratuitous horizontal chrome strip across the trunk. But that's a generic statement; we could say that about every car.  some less noticeable parts of the body have also been changed, especially the front floor and upper wheel housing. Fifty-percent of the body is high-strength steel, providing a rigid structure and light weight. interiorin the cabin there's much new content to bring the 2013 civic upscale to match its competitors. However, there's some sleight of hand, because much of what's now standard in all models got there by discontinuing the low-cost bare-bones dx. There's a new and classy all-black interior color. The seats are well shaped, nicely bolstered and widely adjustable. The most useful information is repeated at the top of the dash, allowing the driver to scan without taking his or her eyes much off the road. Forward sightlines, even over that cool humped hood, are excellent. We appreciated the thinner windshield pillars, and small window set in the angle where the pillar intersects the car's hood. A lot of new cars have thick a-pillars that can obstruct the driver's view of pedestrians and other vehicles, but not here.  the i-mid, or intelligent multi-information display, uses a toggle on the leather-wrapped steering wheel that enables the driver to scroll through a variety of vehicle info. Redesigned sedans and coupes set high bar for midsize class. introductionthe 2013 accord represents the ninth generation of the nameplate. The 2013 honda accord has a new platform, engine, transmissions, suspension, bodywork, interior, electronics and safety equipment. It is appropriate it to call it a new car.  reversing a common trend, the 2013 honda accord is smaller on the outside and, by total volume, smaller on the inside. However, dimensionally the cabin is bigger in every measure except front-seat hiproom. Fuel economy ratings are very competitive. The v6 engine is mildly revised from 2012 and available with a new 6-speed automatic or, on coupe only, a 6-speed manual. It isn't about being the fastest in a straight line or flattest around the corners but rather being well-rounded and doing everything better than average.  we find the new wrapper far more attractive than the last one. It's neither as dramatic as some nor as bland as others, honda preferring proven middle ground to extreme. The 2013 accord has advanced in crash safety and, given the performance of the sister-car acura tl, is expected to get top safety scores.  this ninth-generation accord will not dominate the market it and the camry battled over for decades because there are now many more viable competitors. The ford fusion may take the design mantle away from the hyundai sonata and kia optima, but hyundai has a genesis coupe to compete with accord. The nissan altima lineup includes a coupe, and the altima sedan is new for 2013 and touts excellent epa ratings, as does the roomy volkswagen passat tdi introduced for 2012. The chevrolet malibu is new for 2013, and a new mazda 6 is expected for 2013. Drivers who want more space, performance or features might also look to a nissan maxima or toyota avalon. A 6-speed manual gearbox is standard on accord lx and ex; a cvt continuously variable transmission 800) is available for lx, sport and ex models and comes standard on ex-l. Where the window line on many cars extends from the top of the hood to the top of the trunk, the accord's runs more from the headlight cut-line to the top of the tail lights. This yields not only a credible sedan profile but also adds to the airy cabin spaciousness and proper rear-seat headroom. From overhead the center section is mildly barrel-shaped, the widest point where front and rear doors meet appearing pointed relative the smooth lines of the roof above it.  there's a mild forward tilt to the profile, enhanced by the scalloped front door panels and raked headlight housings. Viewed from behind, the front wheel opening is inset above the sill and shows some tire, an image we associate more with sports cars than family sedans: it adds to appeal though we didn't get to see any potential dirtying effect it will have in rain or snow. Rear doors look like long-wheelbase versions of some sedans, with an almost flat section at the top and opening that runs straight from the door sill to the window kink popularized by bmw and hofmeister about half a century past.  the coupe is nicely proportioned and like the sedan uses a higher than average roofline over the back seat for better-than-normal rear seat room. Unlike the sedan the tail lights do not extend into the trunk lid, and the chrome lower molding is much wider. A more attractive honeycomb lower grille and chrome strip at the bottom edge are handsome without being edgy. Coupes get a more pronounced center section, honeycomb grilles top and bottom, and round fog lights in squared openings for more attitude; it's the same width as the sedan, just an inch lower. The headlight housings and upper grille get blue accents, the hood, bumper and fog light apertures are different, and a black bar bisects the big single grille opening as on many audis. The wheels are also gloss-black, with forward-climbing metal spokes, a sinister look more rapper than tree-hugger. A very obvious blue-ringed, hybrid-badged charging port in the left-front fender is at odds with the square fuel door at the back; we prefer the chevrolet volt's approach of one discrete opening on each side.  at the rear a chrome strip across the trunk and clear backup/signal lenses separate trunk lid and rear window from the back of the car, the end result reminiscent of a hyundai genesis.
