2009 toyota corolla review this car review is specific to this model, not the actual vehicle for sale. All-new, bigger and roomier. introductionthe 2009 toyota corolla is a new car, the 10th generation of the world's most popular passenger car. More than 30 million have been sold in more than 140 different countries. It feels more like a small car than an econobox, as much a smaller camry as anything else. Upgrading to the corolla le includes power windows and door locks. Finally, there are two sportier models, the corolla s which looks the part and has some seat and chassis upgrades, and the corolla xrs which brings a bigger engine, brakes, and tires to the party.  no matter the model, the toyota corolla is a hop-in-and-go kind of car. The standard model, simply called corolla, is the least expensive yet includes fabric upholstery, air conditioning, cd/wma/mp3 xm-ready radio, tilt/telescoping steering wheel, six-way manual driver seat, 60/40 split folding rear seat, outside temperature gauge, power mirrors, and engine immobilizer. Six airbags and abs are standard. Options are the same as the standard, plus 16-inch alloy wheels and remote keyless entry.  xle is the lux-like corolla, and builds on le with 16-inch steel wheels and covers, wood grain trim, optitron instruments, variable intermittent wipers, sliding lid center console, keyless entry, seatback pockets and better radio. The option list swells to include those above not standard, plus moonroof, alloy wheels, eight-speaker jbl audio system, and navigation, though the latter two can not be combined.  the s is the economy sporting model, with color-matched spoilers, fog lamps, black headlight housings, leather-trimmed steering wheel, and sport front seats the upgrades from the base model. Options are extensive and include everything mentioned for standard, le, xle, and leather upholstery.  xrs is the top of the line. It's upgraded with the 2. 4-liter engine, wider, 17-inch tires on alloy wheels, electronic stability control, trunk spoiler, rear disc brakes, strut tower brace, optitron gauges, cruise, leather shifter and steering wheel, and chrome interior accents. Heated mirrors, two radio upgrades, navigation, power locks/windows, moonroof, and leather upholstery are among the options.  safety features that come standard on all corolla models include six airbags: dual frontal, front side-impact (for torso protection), and side curtain airbags (for head protection). Electronic stability control and traction control are optional and we recommend getting them. The light housings are the most similar, driven by both styling heritage and modern safety standards, the shoulders over the wheel openings are more pronounced, and the roofline as it drops behind the rear door is more formal. However, it's immediately recognizable as a toyota, and from behind as a corolla.  messing with success is difficult, so after selling more than 30 million corollas around the world toyota kept the update conservative. Others will appreciate the simple lines. Those same simple lines help keep collision repair prices from extremes, which means lower insurance rates.  both the s and xrs receive different lower nose and tail sections, the area around the fog lamps bearing a distant similarity to the lexus is, and trunk spoilers. It's a look that works better on the xrs by virtue of its larger wheels. It also works best on darker colors because the added panels appear more integrated. Fit and finish both appear to a high level for such an inexpensive car.  the basis for the corolla also forms the base of the matrix, and the all-new 2009 pontiac vibe. The corolla is within a few inches of most of its competitors, the mistubishi lancer being among the longer and the honda civic amongst the shorter. Nissan sentra is noticeably taller and bigger, but the nissan versa is as likely to face off against lesser-priced corolla models. interiorwith such a large audience, the 2009 toyota corolla skips the fringes and focuses on a pleasant interior designed more to offend no one than to excite just a few. Hop in and everything seems rental car simple without the all-too-frequent guilt that comes from not popping for an upgrade from this week's special. As one example, the cloth upholstery appears two-tone at first between bolsters and cushions, but it's just an illusion caused by the texturing.  materials and patterns are understated, speaking to the practical side without ignoring basic needs for tactile comfort, and they vary appropriately by model. The wood grain trim on the xle adds warmth not often seen in compacts and helps break up color monotony. We're surprised that the leather upholstery option, available on the s and xrs models with their sport seats, is not offered on the xle, especially since some competitors like honda's civic do. On the other hand, the other trims aren't subject to glare reflections that the faux wood is.  a conventional dash frames speed and engine revs with fuel and ancillary data, the xle and xrs employing electroluminescent optitron gauges popularized by lexus for utmost clarity. Controls used often are on the tilt/telescoping steering column stalks, with others on dash and center stack. Front seats mix comfort and ease of entry and egress nicely, though the sporting models' heavier bolsters will be appreciated by anyone not shopping at the big 'n tall store. Space of 12. 3 cubic foot is about average and isn't hindered by black boxes and big speakers hanging down under the back window. It's pleasant to drive in all circumstances.  the camry seats five in comfort yet it's relatively compact and easy to park. It's smooth and quiet, but it can accelerate with vigor. Its cabin is attractive, functional and refined, while its styling is aerodynamic and shows vitality.  a wide range of models runs from the well-equipped base camry to the near-luxury camry xle. In between are the popular camry le, a modest step up from the base and available with the v6, and the se, decked out with suspension, tires and trim to please the sporty crowd. Equipped with variable valve timing with intelligence (vvt-i), it's rated at 169 horsepower for the camry, le and xle trim levels and 179 horsepower for the sporty se. Camry v6 models get a 268-horspower 3. 5-liter engine and a six-speed automatic with manual shift feature, and it delivers plenty of response and performance, along with silky smoothness.  standard vehicle stability control (vsc) with traction control regulates engine output and brake application to help maintain control on slippery surfaces. On the camry, they draw attention to the expanse of sheet metal between them, and instead whisper sedate.  the rear end, which looks somewhat like a miniaturized copy of the squared-off trunk lid of the bmw 7 series, finishes the side profile. That bustle-like hump gives the trailing edge of the trunk a slight aero-lip that suggests it's there to reduce rear lift at high speeds. An oversize toyota emblem perches atop the license plate recess. The taillamps repeat the theme of the headlamps and are nicely detailed. The bumper wraps around the back end, capping the corners beneath the taillights and sweeping into a soft, horizontal indentation that, on the v6-equipped models, finishes in cutouts for the chrome-tipped dual exhausts.  the camry se is the easiest model to distinguish, and perhaps the boldest of all. The inference of aero treatment on the trunk lid is boosted on the se with a true spoiler. A full body kit flares the lower edge of the car outward, emphasizing the sport model's lower ride height. Six-spoke, 17-inch aluminum wheels fill those circular wheel wells nicely.  there's aerodynamic massaging not obvious to the eye, particularly on the sport-tuned se and the other specialty camry, the hybrid. Engineers focused on making the underbody as flat as possible to smooth airflow under the car and reduce noise.  on the se, they also tuned the flow to balance downforce, or the aerodynamic force that presses the car to the pavement, nearly equally over the front and rear tires.  with the camry hybrid, the aerodynamic focus was on efficiency. Unique wheel spats and underbelly pans reduce the coefficient of drag (cd) to a low 0. 27. While the outside has been touched with a splash of pizzazz, the inside has been brushed with shades of elegance. The treatment is not quite up to, say, lexus-level luxury, but, especially in the top-of-the-line xle, this camry sets a high bar on interior polish for mid-price, mid-size sedans.  the cabin is trimmed with a brushed metallic finish in the base, le, se, and hybrid. Real-looking glossy wood grain is used inside the xle, including surrounds for the door-release handles.  the fabric upholstery combines breathable, waffle-texture insets with smooth bolsters and backing. The leather upgrade isn't quite kid glove, but it feels expensive. On the less positive side, the hard plastic covering the roof pillars looks cheap, and the mouse fur headliner disappoints.  the camry is a roomy sedan, with comfortable seats front and rear, though the seat bottoms are short on thigh support for taller occupants. Rear-seat passengers in the xle enjoy a luxury rarely seen in this class: reclining seatbacks.  the sloping hood delivers good sightlines from the driver's seat. The thick c-pillar (that part of the body supporting the roof behind the rear doors), looks less imposing to the driver than from outside the car. Low-profile rear-seat head restraints leave the view in the rearview mirror mostly unblocked. Outside mirrors are placed farther rearward than we'd like, forcing a turn of the head for quick checks instead of just glancing sideways.  almost everything inside the camry speaks refined function. The speedometer and tachometer are large, circular and easy to scan, save for brief periods at dusk and under certain types of street lighting, when the luminescent instruments on all but the se can wash out.

Camry sales topped 10 million in 2013, coincidentally the nameplate's 30th anniversary. One in five toyotas sold in the u. Is a camry.  clearly, the camry appeals to a large and broad audience. Toyota claims the camry is the safest, quietest, most fuel-efficient car in its class, and we have no reason to doubt those claims.  camry is an attractive car, with clean sides and nice edges. Benefitting from the latest impact energy management engineering, it's built on a rigid chassis using a lot of high-strength steel and ultra high-strength steel.  the interior is nice, the dashboard neat and stylish, the instrument panel pretty and functional. That expands the 2014 toyota camry lineup to seven models, from the stripped-down camry l to the sport-tuned se to two versions of the environmentally friendly camry hybrid. The 3. 5-liter v6 produces 268 horsepower. Toyota boasts a range of almost 600 miles. The v6 delivers stronger torque, so it's more powerful and more responsive around town in addition to being smoother.  the tuned suspension in the sporty camry se might be too firm for some. We did not find the camry se uncomfortable, but we did find the softer camry xle more relaxing around town. We preferred camry se's tighter steering in all circumstances.  camry hybrid uses a 2. 5-liter atkinson cycle engine rated 156 horsepower, in tandem with a 105 kw permanent magnet ac electric motor, which by itself can produce 199 pounds-feet of torque at up to 1500 rpm. Combined net output is 200 horsepower. The hybrid feels like a totally different car than other models, as it slows everything down and makes the vehicle feel bigger. Toyota has been a leader in hybrid technology but the honda accord hybrid seems to have the edge here. Midsize sedans that compete with toyota camry include honda accord, ford fusion, chevrolet malibu, nissan altima, mazda6, hyundai sonata, kia optima, volkswagen passat. lineupthe 2014 toyota camry comes in seven models. Camry se v6 upgrades further with touch-screen navigation, siriusxm, hd radio, and toyota entune.  an optional power moonroof 915) is available for camry le, se, and hybrid xle.  safety equipment standard on all models includes 10 airbags, electronic stability control with traction control, abs with brake assist and brake force distribution, and a tire pressure monitoring system. A rearview camera is optional as part of several option packages. Blind spot monitor system with rear cross traffic alert is available for xle 500). walkaroundthe toyota camry looks svelte, with no lumpy cladding and almost no chrome. Although the surfaces flow with characteristic toyota softness, strategically placed creases lend both definition and decision. Toyota calls it aero-corner design: hips and shoulders tucked in.  wheels help distinguish camry trim levels. Camry le uses wheelcovers over 16-inch steel wheels, camry xle uses 10-spoke 17-inch alloy wheels, camry se uses 17- or 18-inchers, with two different five-spoke designs. There's a nice character line under the windows slanting slightly up to the rear deck, where there's a small spoiler lip on the se. Windows are outlined in chrome, but no more, except for a thin strip at the rocker level on the le and xle. Body-colored door handles on all models.  the face of the camry se is tweaked, for the better, with body color over the black mesh grille, and more aggressive air intakes in the valance under the bumper. Headlamps are outlined in black, angled, narrow and sleek, with a neat little notch in the line at the bottom. interiorinterior materials are different on different trim levels. Camry l, le and xle use a nice fabric, while the camry se uses a combination of fabric with softex synthetic leather trim. The camry hybrid has its own material, more like the se. Trims are different too: le is silver, xle wood, se silver grain, and hybrid a metallic tech grain.  we found the driver's position comfortable, with thoughtful padding for the driver's right leg against the center console, and high armrests. The standard leather is overlapped in an arc with neat stitching, for a saddle-like effect; new passengers will compliment it and maybe run their hands over the seam. The little window for the clock up at the top looks like a hood scoop.  instruments on most models are in 3d. The instruments themselves are the same, the only difference is in the rings around the gauges, chrome or satin.  the hybrid's panel is the same only prettier. It has optitron meters with white illumination, blue metallic printing, and white lighting pointer. Cargo space in the camry hybrid is 13. 1 cubic feet, a decent-size trunk.  trunk space on all other camry models is a roomy 15. 4 cubic feet.  the manually operated climate control has big dials and easy buttons on the camry le. Low-rolling-resistance tires are loud on the pavement.  there's the optional jbl green edge sound system, which uses up to 58 percent less power and is 27 percent lighter; and ent. 2013 toyota rav4 review this car review is specific to this model, not the actual vehicle for sale. While the 2013 rav4 may look a touch better than the outgoing model, and drive better too, in true toyota fashion it remains remarkably vanilla.  the rav4 was introduced to the u. S market back in 1995 as the world's first crossover suv. Since then, three progressive generations have been developed, including the current generation 2006 rav4. The spare wheel is no longer stored on the tailgate but in the more commonly used location under the trunk floor. Despite the changes, it still looks remarkably uninspiring and bland.  the 2013 rav4 interior gets some nice upgrades, including a softex leather band that runs the entire width of the dash. While the feel doesn't scream luxury, it does stack up well against the competition, and comfort is good too.  on the road, the 2013 rav4 is nice step forward in terms of handling. It's feels far firmer and planted than before. The steering feels a touch rubbery, but braking is good. Despite the improvements, the car still fails to engage the driver. It's better, but not fun.  overall, the new 2013 rav4 is a solid improvement over the outgoing model. The optional rearview camera can help the driver spot a child behind the car when backing up. Optional all-wheel drive can improve handling stability in slippery conditions. walkaroundthe 2013 rav4 is an evolution of the bland outgoing model. While it has been modernized and freshened, it is still very conservative. Toyota is conscious to try and inject more passion into their vehicles, but understand the ramifications of alienating their loyal crop of current customers. The rav4 is most definitely designed with them in mind.  toyota describes the new design as dynamic, sleek, and aggressive. The protruding front overhang looks like a boxer with a swollen lip, and little has been done to portray emotion or modernization from the front angle. Headlights do not receive the leds that have become standard amongst manufacturers, although halogen headlights are now adorned. The roofline slopes back from the front window, with a rear spoiler extending the roofline's arc, as well as enhancing the rav4's aerodynamic co-efficiency.  furthering the car's aerodynamic prowess are small vortex generators, molded into the taillight cases and near the base of the a-pillars. Aero undertrays beneath the passenger cabin help smooth and control airflow. Softex is a leather substitute that is fractionally cheaper to make. While the feel may be slightly inferior to real leather, it isn't sacrificing much.  the steering wheel is telescopic and in the rav4 limited model it is wrapped with leather. The center console is well laid out and all the dials are intuitive. The 6. 1-inch screen looks a little 2005, but at the same time, we appreciate that it comes as a standard feature in all models.  the gear lever on the limited model is draped in leather, but in all models, the lower part of the center console is made of a very cheap, flimsy plastic. The sun visors are also the worst quality we have ever seen. They feel like they derived from wal-mart.  poor quality plastic continues in various places throughout the cabin, and it feels like it undoes some of the sophistication added by the leather on the dash and door panels. It's like buying a hugo boss suit from nordstrom, then finishing the look off with a tommy bahama shirt.  on a brighter note, the push button start on the limited model is a nice touch, and the second row seating is comfortable with decent legroom (37. 2 inches). This is, in fact, an inch less than the old rav4 but the front seats have been granted an extra inch with trunk space increasing, too. With the second row folded flat, cargo space increases by 0. 4-inches, giving it a class-leading total of 73. 4-inches.  in general, the 2013 rav4 is a comfortable, pleasing place to be. We just wish they hadn't skimped on the quality of the plastic utilized, as that really neutralizes an otherwise excellent job. driving impressionwhile the 2013 rav4 is a marked improvement over the outgoing model, it still lacks character, emotion and engagement. The more powerful v6 option available in the outgoing rav4 is ditched, with toyota stating they sat stagnant on dealers' lots.  replacing the old 4-speed transmission is a 6-speed automatic that uses the last two gears as overdrive for increased fuel-efficiency.  fuel economy has been improved, earning an epa-estimated 24/31/26 mpg city/highway/combined with front-wheel drive (compared to 22/28/24 mpg for the old rav4) and 22/2.
